Custom Quilt Guide
We want you to be completely happy with your custom quilt, so we'll email you throughout the entire process.
All emails from Cockatoo Custom Quilts will come from one email address: email@example.com.
Please ensure you communicate every question, big or small, for custom quilts.
We want to make absolutely sure that we understand your wishes, and that you understand our processes.
1. Request a Quote
You will need to know what quilt size you want in order to receive a quote. Please refer to our Quilt Sizing Guide for our size labels and their measurements.
2. Order Early
If you intend for the quilt to be a gift for a special occasion, please order as early as possible to ensure delivery before the due date. We need to know this due date in order to confirm whether the quilt could be made and delivered in time.
During off-peak periods (not the 6 weeks leading up to major Australian public holidays), we can usually create and post a custom quilt in approximately 4 - 6 weeks. Australia Post should deliver your order within 7 business days of postage.

3. Complete Our Questionnaire
We find it much easier to design (i.e. narrow down the colour scheme and pattern) and make recommendations when we understand the personality of the quilt recipient.
Therefore, we have a questionnaire that helps us understand the recipient’s preferences. For example:
- Favourite colours
- Favourite sport code / team
- Music preferences
- Favourite animal
- Favourite place / holiday spot.
We will never ask for their personal information (i.e. residential / work address, credit card / bank details, mother's maiden name, school name / address, license, etc) in this questionnaire.
We will email you the questionnaire in Microsoft Word format. Please complete it as soon as possible. The more questions you answer, the better and more relevant our design suggestions.
You can either:
- Send the questionnaire directly to the quilt recipient to fill out
- Fill in the questionnaire yourself (especially if you want the quilt to be a surprise gift)
- Send the questionnaire to a trusted family member or friend of the quilt recipient (i.e. someone who knows them and their tastes very well).
4. Pay the Deposit
Once a design has been agreed upon, the quote has been finalised and the order is activated, we will require you pay a 20% deposit.
We will send you a payment request from our official website (www.cockatoocustomquilts.com.au). Simply follow the payment link in the invoice that we send you via email.
Alternatively, you can pay the deposit directly into our business bank account or our business PayPal account (Cockatoo Custom Quilts). We will send you our banking details via our email.
All payments (including the deposit) will of course receive a receipt upon verification. They will be emailed to you.
Should you withdraw your order later in the process, especially after the quilt construction stage has begun, we will either:
- Sell the finished quilt in our Shop as a pre-made quilt and refund your deposit to the account you originally paid it with.
- Scrap quilts with personalised designs (i.e. quilts that include names, dates or handprints), as we can't sell them in our Shop to recoup our expenses.
In the second scenario, we will keep the full deposit. This ensures we're partially reimbursed for our time and materials. No exceptions.
5. Choose your Fabrics
We will email photos of the fabric selections we recommend (in your colour scheme, of course).
Please be aware that colours may vary between computer / phone screens and reality. We will try our best to provide high quality images during this process.
If we don't have what you want in our extensive fabric collection, we will source it for your order. Licensed fabrics (i.e. Marvel, Disney, Harry Potter, etc) are generally more expensive, so may incur extra charges.
We won't start cutting or constructing until you are completely happy with your fabric selection.
*Designs with handprints will need you to email images of the traced handprints before this process can begin. We'll send you more detailed instructions if this applies to your quilt.
This stage is when we cut, pin and sew! You get to relax here because we'll be doing all the work - our favourite part!
We will still be sending you email updates with photos. If something isn't right, please let us know ASAP.
Once the quilt top (i.e. the front / top layer) is finished, you will be sent an email with more photos for final approval.
7. Complete Payment for Order
At this stage, the quilt will not be completed until the order amount is paid in full.
If you require a payment plan, please request one as early as possible to avoid delays to receiving your finished quilt.
You will receive receipts via email after any payments.
We will confirm once the order amount has been paid in full and verified.
8. Quilting & Binding
Next, we decide the quilting details (stitching that holds the 3 layers together):
- Design (motif / image)
- Cotton thread colour
We will send you more photos of recommended options for you to choose from. The quilting designs will be photos of paper patterns, so the finished look is often softer, subtler in reality.
The binding is the fabric strip that covers the raw edges of the quilt. This fabric is usually the same as the adjoining border (where applicable).
Again, we will send photo options via email for you to choose from.
Once you confirm your choices, there is NO changing. Make sure you are happy before we start quilting and binding.
9. Confirming the Final Product
Once you give your approval of the finished quilt, a short message can be added to the label on the back.
Our labels must contain the name of the quilt and state that it was made by Cockatoo Custom Quilts. Also, they will always be handwritten in laundry marker. No exceptions (this is to prevent fraud).
We will post your finished quilt and the printed Care Instructions the next business day via Australia Post, with 'signature upon delivery' and postal insurance.
